The Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) Assistance Service
About the service
The VAC Assistance Service is a counselling and referral service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Call toll-free: 1-800-268-7708
This service is for Veterans, former RCMP members, their families, and caregivers and is provided at no cost. This voluntary and confidential service is delivered through a nation-wide team of mental health professionals.
When you call, you will speak to a mental health professional who will ask questions to determine your needs. They will also ask your location so they can match you up with a local mental health professional for face-to-face counselling.
Many kinds of help are offered
The VAC Assistance Service provides counselling for difficulties that affect well-being. These may include work-related issues, health concerns, family and marital problems, psychological difficulties and other problems.
For any issue, there can be up to 20 hours of counselling. For example, a family of five, where one parent is a veteran, could be having relationship issues, work-related issues and problems affecting one of the children. Each family member affected could have sessions with a professional who can provide assistance in up to 20 hours of counselling for each area of concern.
When dealing with grief for the loss of a loved one, bereavement services are also available. And if you would like to talk to a member of the clergy, pastoral outreach can be provided.
