The New Veterans Charter is designed to meet the increasingly complex health and social needs of ill and injured Veterans, Canadian Forces members and their families. As a result, the New Veterans Charter offers both immediate and ongoing financial support while also providing full physical and psychological rehabilitation services, vocational assistance, health care benefits and one-on-one case management — all aimed at helping Veterans make a successful transition to civilian life.
These benefits and services build on the assistance already available through the Canadian Forces, including early medical intervention and long-term disability benefits.
The New Veterans Charter was unanimously passed by Parliament in May 2005 and implemented on April 1, 2006. The Government of Canada subsequently tabled enhancements to the New Veterans Charter in November 2010 and these measures, totaling $2 billion over the life of the program, were implemented on October 3, 2011.
The over-arching principle of the New Veterans Charter is to encourage and facilitate the "wellness" of our CF members, Veterans and their families. The services and benefits of the New Veterans Charter are available to CF Veterans when they need them, for as long as they need them.
The following materials summarize these services and benefits and address some of the common misconceptions surrounding the New Veterans Charter.
