Black History
The tradition of celebrating Black History during February goes back to 1926 and the efforts of pioneering Black historian, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. In December of 1995, the Parliament of Canada passed a motion officially designating February as Black History Month. This initiative was an acknowledgement of the long and rich history of Black Canadians and their contributions to Canada and the world.

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
"In Flanders Fields" was first published in Englands "Punch" magazine in December, 1915. Within months, this poem came to symbolize the sacrifices of all who were fighting in the First World War. Today, the poem continues to be a part of Remembrance Day ceremonies in Canada and other countries.

Founding a Nation
During the First World War, from 1914 to 1918, seventy soldiers of the Canadian Expeditionary Force received the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valour in the face of the enemy.
