Canadian delegation attends final commemorative events in Belgium

November 12, 2017

The Government of Canada delegation wrapped up its journey in Belgium today, starting the day at the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper. They explored the museum, which provides a comprehensive timeline of the First World War and its impact on the Flanders region, and then continued on to the New British Cemetery. Here they participated in a commemorative ceremony in honour of Alexander Decoteau, Canada’s first Indigenous-Canadian police officer and a talented long-distance runner, who was killed by an enemy sniper during the Battle of Passchendaele. Members of the delegation then participated in the 10-mile Poppies’ Run in Zonnebeke, a five-kilometre stretch of which was dedicated to Decoteau.
