On November 11, 2016, the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, participated in the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

He joined His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnson, Governor General of Canada, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as many Veterans and serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, in placing a wreath in honour of all those who have served and continue to serve our country.

On November 8th, the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence participated in a wreath laying ceremony at Confederation Park in Ottawa in honour of National Aboriginal Veterans Day.

The ceremony was hosted by The Canadian Aboriginal Veterans and Serving Members Association.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, joined His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, and Mr. Stephen Quick, Director General, Canadian War Museum, this evening at the Canadian War Museum for the 17th annual Candlelight Tribute honouring Canada’s Veterans.

The event featured a symbolic passing of the torch of remembrance, during which Veterans handed candles to youth. The moving tradition pays respect to the many brave men and women in uniform who have served Canada throughout the years to protect our shared values.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, joined the Honourable George Furey, Speaker of the Senate of Canada, and the Honourable Geoff Regan, Speaker of the House of Commons, for a special remembrance ceremony in the Senate Chamber today. The Senate ceremony of remembrance is a signature event and marks the beginning of Veterans’ Week in Canada.

This annual commemorative ceremony invites Veterans and currently serving Canadian Armed Forces personnel to participate in the official launch of this important week, which encourages acts of remembrance and continued support for Canada’s Veterans.

Veterans, their families and local officials joined Doug Eyolfson, Member of Parliament for Charleswood–St. James–Assiniboia–Headingley, on behalf of the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, for the reopening of the Veterans Affairs Canada office in Brandon, Manitoba.

Staff at the Brandon office were excited to be part of the reopening event. Their work will consist of answering questions about VAC services and benefits; arrange for pension medical examinations; and assist Veterans to complete and submit applications and receipts. Case-managed Veterans will also be able to meet with their case manager.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, joined Veterans and their families, along with newly hired employees, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, today to provide an update on the Government of Canada’s mandate commitments to improve the lives of Veterans and their families.

The Minister held a meet and greet Friday morning with more than 50 new frontline and support staff, including case managers, who were attending an orientation and training program. By hiring more frontline employees, the Department will ensure each case manager has a caseload of an average of 25 Veterans.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, joined Veterans and their families in Surrey, British Columbia, today to announce that a new Veterans Affairs Canada office will open by May 2017.

The new Surrey office will be located on the 3rd floor at 13479 108th Avenue, Surrey, B.C., and once opened, will employ approximately 21 staff who will serve approximately 7,500 Veterans. Staff at the Surrey office will answer questions about VAC services and benefits; arrange pension medical examinations; and assist Veterans to complete and submit applications and receipts. Case-managed Veterans will also be able to meet with their case manager. Minister Hehr reaffirmed the Government of Canada’s commitment to do more for Veterans.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, joined Veterans and their families in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to announce that Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) will provide an enhanced level of service and outreach to Veterans and their families in the territories and other northern communities.

Frontline VAC staff will travel to meet face-to-face with Veterans and their families and share information on benefits and services with those who may not be aware. The Department is continuing to hire up to 400 new employees to help ensure that Veterans, Canadian Armed Forces members, RCMP personnel, and their families are provided with the best possible services when and where they need them. Hiring new employees will permit the Department to reduce case managers’ caseloads to a maximum of 25 Veterans.
