In 2024, Veterans Affairs Canada and our partners will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

Events

Below is a list of events being held in both Canada and France. Please check this web page for more information in the Spring of 2024.


Events in Canada

D-Day anniversary lead-up event
Beechwood National Cemetery
Ottawa, ON

The Government of Canada will organize an event featuring interviews from Second World War Veterans and a visit to the gravesite of D-Day Veterans.

27 May 2024 — 7:00pm
D-Day anniversary lead-up event
Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
Halifax, NS

The Government of Canada will organize an event featuring interviews from Second World War Veterans and a public viewing of the Citadel’s “Storm the Beach” D-Day exhibit.

5 June 2024 — 10:00am
Commemorative ceremony
Dieppe Cenotaph at Dieppe City Hall
Dieppe, NB

The Government of Canada will organize a wreath-laying ceremony at Dieppe City Hall. Public participants should plan to arrive by 9:30am as the event will begin promptly at 10:00am.

223 Weldon Street, Moncton, New Brunswick

The Government of Canada will host a sunset service on the eve of the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Public participants should plan to arrive by 7:30pm as the event will begin promptly at 8:00pm.

We will host a ceremony to honour and remember Canada’s participation in D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

Commemorative Ceremony
National War Memorial
Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario

We will host a wreath laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa to honour and remember Canada’s participation in D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

Events in France

5 June 2024 — 10:30am
Commemorative ceremony and visit
Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery
Bény-sur-Mer, France

The Government of Canada will host a short commemorative ceremony and visit of the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery.

IMPORTANT: Road closures will be in effect at Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery. There will be no parking permitted on site during this time. The road will be closed from Reviers to the D35 roundabout from 7:00am to 1:30pm local time. For those wishing to visit the Cemetery during these hours, you are encouraged to use street parking in town, or Les Ruraux, but please note that the weather may impact the dirt road conditions. Parking may be up to 5 kilometers from the entrance. The only pedestrian traffic allowed to circulate will be from the town of Reviers (eatstbound traffic). The Gendarmerie will not allow access at the roundabout D404 and D35 for public safety. All pedestrians are asked to be on site by 9:00 a.m. or they will not be able to access the site.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Candlelight Vigil
Beny-sur-Mer Canadian Cemetery
Bény-sur-Mer, France

As part of the Great Vigil programming put forward by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery will be lit by candlelight in remembrance of all who took part in D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

Note: This event is not organized by the Government of Canada. For more information please contact the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

6 June 2024 – 11:00am
Canadian National Ceremony
Juno Beach Centre
Courseulles-sur-Mer, France

We will host a ceremony at Juno Beach in France to honour and remember Canada’s participation in D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Registration to attend this event will be required.

As we have currently reached the anticipated event site capacity, further registrations are no longer being accepted.

Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery
Bretteville-sur-Laize, France

The Government of Canada will organize a commemorative ceremony followed by a visit of Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery.
