A long service medal.


Eligibility and criteria

This medal was for Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and airman, who were permanent members of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), who had 18 years of service. The dates were from 01 August 1944 to 01 September for members enrolled prior to 01 September 1939.


Description

A circular, silver medal, 1.42 inches in diameter. For mounting, an ornate scroll suspender is attached to the medal with a single-toe claw.

On the obverse:

King George VI: A bareheaded effigy, facing left, and one of the legends:

  1. GEORGIVS VI D :G :BR : OMN : REX ET INDIAE IMP :
  2. GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA : BRITT : OMN : REX FID: DEF :

Queen Elizabeth II: A bareheaded effigy, facing right, and the legend: ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA

The reverse displays an eagle in flight surmounted by the Imperial Crown, and the legend around the edge: FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT.

The bi-coloured ribbon is 1.25 inches wide, left half dark blue, right half crimson, with narrow white edge stripes.

Given for 18 years additional service (none awarded).


Historical notes

  • The recipient's rank and name, and RCAF are engraved around the rim.
  • There were 487 awarded to Canadians, mainly King George VI first type.
  • The original RCAF order announcing the medal stated that it would have a bar with CANADA on it similar to the Canadian Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct but no such medal was ever struck and this medal was issued to Canadians as described here.
  • Superseded by Canadian Forces Decoration.
