His real name is Johann (aka John) Unger Friesen. Son of Henrich S. (aka Peter) Friesen and Henrietta P.F. Unger of Steinbach, Manitoba.

Served in Manitoba, Hong Kong with Force C, Japan as a prisoner of war. He had 958 days of service, including 828 overseas.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the Manitoba government named Friesen Lake located north of Lake Solmundsson in his honor in 1995.

Location:

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
