London Gazette # 31128 dated 14 January 1919, "During the attack on Upton Wood on 30 August 1918, when the officer and senior N.C.O.'s had become casualties, he took charge of the platoon, which he led with great gallantry and skill, under very heavy fire, making daring reconnaissances before leading his men to a position. He set a very fine example to his platoon and inspired them with great confidence by his high qualities of leadership."

Location:

Sains-les-Marquion is a village and it lies approximately 2 kilometres south of Marquion, which lies on the main straight road from Arras to Cambrai. The Ontario Cemetery lies to the south of the village. The cemetery was made after the capture of Sains-les-Marquion by the Canadian Division on September 27, 1918. The Cemetery was enlarged after the Armistice and now covers an area of 949 square metres. It is enclosed by a rubble wall.
