Mentioned in despatches, "in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the combined attack on Dieppe." Croix de guerre avec palme de bronze (France) 'Captain Hertzberg rendered valuable services in the preliminary training and organization of the troops under his command, up to and including the actual embarkation for the attack on Dieppe, 19 August 1942. He embarked with one of the larger groups of his unit, and during several hours of intermittent bombing and artillery fire remained in an exposed position on the deck of his craft to supervise the anti-aircraft machine guns under his command. Throughout the entire operation, Captain Hertzberg, by his bearing and conduct, set a fine example to the men.'

The Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery is on the road to Le Kef (Route P5), about 3 kilometres west of Medjez-el-Bab. Medjez-el-Bab lies on the banks of the River Medjerda 60 kilometres west of Tunis.

  • Inscription– Olaf Hertzberg was a student at Appleby College.   His name is inscribed on a tablet on the Memorial School building, shown above.   The building was built as a memorial to the members of the Appleby Community killed in the Second World War.   Every Remembrance Day the school Cadet Corps parades at a service in the Chapel, built as a memorial to those members of the Appleby Community killed in the First World War, and the names on the Honour Rolls from both World Wars are read out.  The candle sticks in the chapel were donated by his mother in Capt. Hertzberg's memory.
