His full name is John Ignatius McNeil.

Son of M. Mrs John R. McNeil of Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

On 6 November 1942, the Empire Sky was sailing unescorted from Hull, England, to Archangel, USSR, now Russia, via Reykjavik, Iceland, Russia, via Reykjavik, Iceland, when she was torpedoed by U-625 at 10:24 pm about 20 miles (32 km) south-east of the island of Spitzberg, Norway. At 10:50 pm, the ship received the coup de grâce, exploded in a tremendous explosion and sank in position 76°20'N/17°30'W. The captain, 41 crew members and 18 gunners lost their lives. There were no survivors.
