Son of Henry and Rosina Hobbs, of Redcliffe, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. He was recruited on 24 May 1918. He claimed to be employed as a fisherman and was single. His headstones inscription states, Jesus lives, Our hearts know well, Nought from Us, His love Shall Sever.
