Location:

Fleurbaix is a village 5 kilometres south-west of Armentieres at the junction of the road from Armentieres and the road to Bethune. Petillon is a village to the south of Fleurbaix and RUE-PETILLON MILITARY CEMETERY is 3 kilometres south of Fleurbaix on the south side of the road from Petillon to La Boutillerie.

  • Photo of John Thomas Hamilton Turnbull– John Thomas Hamilton Turnbull (b 15 Nov 1894 twp N Orillia Ont, d 19 Mar 1915 France), was killed in action WW1, and buried Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, Pas de Calais, France. He was working for Westinghouse in Hamilton, Ontario when he decided to sign up. That was with the 1st Canadian contingent, 16th Battalion.
From the paper which says------"The first casualty from this area in the First Canadian Contingent occured in France on March 19, 1915, when John Turnbull, a private with the 16th. Battalion was killed. He was a native of Orillia Township and his parents are Mr. & Mrs. Robt. Turnbull, Hampshire Mills."
He was the younger brother of Mary Ann, Wallace Andrew, & Ellen Elizabeth, and older brother of Harriet, Noel, and Mabel Amelia Turnbull, all of whom were born on Lot 20, Conc iii, twp N Orillia, co Simcoe, Ontario, Canada.  His parents were Robert &  Elizabeth (Southwell) Turnbull.
