Baptized Eugène Couillard. Son of Herménégilde Couillard and Élizabeth Langlois, of Farnham, Missisquoi, Québec.

According to an old tradition, observed in some families, Eugène took his godfather’s name (i.e. Pierre Girard) after Pierre died in 1912 ; which explains why he enrolled as Pierre Couillard.

His Battalion was in brigade support South-East of Agny and sent on fatigue duty to improve the trenches of Telegraph Hill Switch, near Neuville-Vitasse. Pierre-Eugène was killed by a heavy shell while on fatigue duty.

Location:

Wailly is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais about 6 kilometres south-west from Arras in the valley of the little river Crinchon. WAILLY ORCHARD CEMETERY stands above the village on its outskirts in part of the old orchard.
