Baptized Joseph-Louis-Alfred Béland. He stated being born on 8 February 1885 when he enlisted. Son of Antoine Béland (deceased in 1907) and Malvina Grenier (deceased in 1922). Married to Rose-Alba Renaud in 1906 and father of four children, of Montréal, Québec.

He was evacuated of his unit on 3 January 1918 and was sent to England at the end of the month due to chronic nephritis. He died there two months later of this condition; pleuritic and pneumonia.
