Baptized Joseph-Magloire-Herménégilde Belle-Isle. Son of Michel Belzil and Eugénie Pinel-dit-Lafrance, of Rivière-Trois-Pistoles, Bas-St-Laurent, Québec. The last name of this family gradually evolved over one generation, form Belle-Isle-dit-Gagnon à Belle-Isle, Belzile and Belzil. He stated being born on 20 October 1884 when he enlisted.
