Orphaned by their mother, their father having remarried, Raoul and his older brother Émile were living in a boarding house in Montréal and enlisted together in the 22nd Battalion. Raoul may not have been healthy enough to withstand the rigors of military service, as he died of intestinal problems two months later at the St. Jean camp.

Brother of Private Joseph Laurin, who died while serving with the Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment).
