Son of Herman Joseph and Edna (née Desgardine)Gauthier of Lakeview, Ontario. Brother of John Gerrard Joseph, Donald Gerald James, Lawrence Joseph Hector and half-brother Robert Arnold Joseph. Ordinary Seaman Gauthier is also commemorated on the Korean War Memorial at the Naval Museum of Alberta at HMCS Tecumseh in Calgary, Alberta and the Wall of Remembrance in Ottawa, Ontario.

Location:

The memorial is located in the United Nations Cemetery in Tanggok, a suburb of Busan. The stone memorial with bronze panels was erected to commemorate commonwealth soldiers who died and whose burial places are unknown. Twenty one Canadians are listed on the bronze plaques.

  • Newspaper Clipping– This picture, showing some of the ship's company of HMCS NOOTKA, including Ordinary Seaman L.A. Gauthier, appeared in the Toronto Star newspaper, at page 16, on January 11, 1951.  Ordinary Seaman Gauthier is in the centre row, third from the right (with his left forearm held across the front of his body).  By odd coincidence, this picture was published in the Star on the same day on which he died.  (Submitted by Navy League Cadet Corps CHAMBLY, Barrie, Ontario.)

The memorial was officially unveiled on 25 June 2000 by the Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta and the Chief of the Maritime Staff
