3/Cst. Varney was born in Courtenay, British Columbia. On his way to deliver a summons, 3/Cst. Varney was notified of a motor vehicle collision close to where he was. He stated that he would check it out, but overshot a T-intersection on a rural road. 3/Cst. Varney is buried in Courtenay, British Columbia.
Commemorated on Page 137 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Honour Roll Book.
