Cpl. Smart was known to be a good swimmer. Before being assigned to his home province of Ontario, Cpl. Smart spent most of his service in Nova Scotia. He accidentally drowned while on patrol in Lake Simcoe, near Georgina Island, Ontario. Cpl. Smart was buried in Windsor, Nova Scotia. He was married to Reta and they had two daughters.

Commemorated on Page 92 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Honour Roll Book.
