Cst. Counsell was a carpenter by trade. He was shot and killed at Parkland, Alberta, by a suspect who was wanted for the shooting of his son. Cst. Counsell had recently married Audrey Blake. He is buried in Lethbridge.

Commemorated on Page 65 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Honour Roll Book.
