Canada Gate

Veterans Week (Previous)

Transcript

“Canada Gate” is an art installation near the Passchendaele

Canadian Memorial. It is located next to the road, Canadalaan,

which leads to the Passchendaele market square. This arch is a

companion piece to the “Last Steps Memorial Arch” located on a

pier in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Footsteps are burned into the

replica “duck boards” at each arch … symbolizing soldiers’ last

steps on Canadian soil as they boarded troop ships to their

final steps on this First World War battlefield in

Flanders. The Last Steps Memorial Arch and the Canada Gate are

powerful reminders of how far from home Canadians travelled to

serve in the Great War. They also connect two important

historical sites in a unique and meaningful

way.#CanadaRemembers
