And then the next guy went up a little further, and jeez it was a long climb, we had spent all morning getting up there, were getting closer and closer this was increasing, increasing, jeez one guy he said, "Sir, look at this. This is a, a command from, from Army Headquarters for the 8th Army." He said, "What's it doing up here." Then we went along a little further and then it came to our conclusion jeez it must be a plane crash and as we got to the top of the hill a DC-3 loaded with crew and all the dispatches for the 8th Army had sheared the top of the, of the mountain and the bottom of the aircraft had hit and buried with the crew and the rest took their heads off, you know, the top of their bodies was off and it went down the other side and this was all 8th Army including the mail. So one of the, one of the wireless operators said, "Sir, this is the damnedest thing but," he said, "this is a letter for you." And it was from my fiancé salvaged in air crash. Interviewer: That is just incredible. So I saved it and when we got all the documents together and got

down and we got the rescue people from the Air Force and everything in I said, "I want that letter back", and he said, "Look we'll see that you get it back and we'll, it'll be stamped ‘Salvaged in Air craft'." Interviewer: That is incredible. My god, you know, I've saved that thing... Interviewer: That is incredible.

Richard Likely was born in Saint John, N.B. on May 18, 1920. His father ran a family owned timber business in St. John. He talks about his middle class upbringing and how he joined the Army against his mother's wishes. He headed overseas to his first posting with the 5th Anti-Aircraft (ack-ack) Division.
