It was a signal’s unit but I myself in Service Corp as administrator, we had the office jobs and there was, I think there was twelve of us, Service Corp there and there was also Ordnance Corp, that’s supply, but mainly sigs. I looked after all the movies that came over from Canada, all the books that the Salvation Army sent over. Used to keep a library and I would, had a schedule where the movies would go. We had ten detachments in the Congo. We would send the movies to make sure all the detachments got it. We also loaned them to the Irish Republican Army were over there and Indians were there from India so we provided them with movies and that too so. We had two hours off for lunch because they closed down for two hours for siesta and then after lunch went back to work and work till five and then the rest was free time. We played a lot of ball, a lot of softball and volleyball, tennis, horse shoes.

Bert Diamond

Bert Diamond was born on April 6, 1936 in Montreal, Quebec. He worked as an Administrator for the Canadian National Railway for eight years before joining the army. He was talked into joining the service corps by his younger brother. Mr. Diamond said they were always looking for hockey players and baseball players, he was the 4th in the family to join on the January 13th and bunked with his brother in Borden just after basic training. He joined the army to travel so he was glad to go to Leopoldville in Congo where he was in charge of sport and welfare. M r. Diamond was in Congo for nine months, one year in Egypt, two years in Ghana and five years in Germany. Mr. Diamond was married and has two daughters.
