UNICORN’s CO at the time, Commander Tom Gordon, arranged for the anchor to be shipped from the dockyard in Esquimalt, the concrete pad was poured in 1989 and the anchor placed. The monument was consecrated by the unit Padre, Lieutenant Commander Russell in May 1990.

The plaque dedicating the monument to “the Prairie Sailor” was added for the Battle of the Atlantic in May 1990. In May 2009, the two side plaques were added in memorial to the Battle of the Atlantic.
