On November 28, 2019 the Government of Canada delegation attended a ceremony of remembrance at Agira Canadian War Cemetery and later visited the two Canadian monuments at the summit of Monte Assoro dedicated to the memory of the soldiers of The Royal Canadian Artillery Monument and The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment Monument. The delegation was led by the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, and Alexandra Bugailiskis, Ambassador of Canada to Italy. At Agira Canadian War Cemetery, they were joined by the Honourable Maria Gaetana Greco, Mayor of Agira. At Monte Assoro, they were joined by Antonio Licciardo, Mayor of Assoro. On July 10, 1943, following the successful conclusion of the North African campaign, a combined allied force of 160,000 Commonwealth and American troops invaded Sicily as a prelude to the assault on mainland Italy. The invasion lasted 38 days. Agira Canadian War Cemetery contains 490 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, of which 484 are Canadian.
