On Friday April 22, the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, addressed Canada’s Korean War Veterans in a wreath-laying ceremony and reception at the Canadian War Museum to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong.

Minister Hehr paid tribute to the Canadian soldiers who served in the battle, which took place from April 22-25, 1951, during the Korean War. The event was hosted by the Korea Veterans Association of Canada and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, in partnership with the Canadian War Museum and the Korean War Commemorative Committee (KWCC).

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, delivered a speech on the opening day of the Conference on Security and Defence. The Conference of Defence Associations (CDA) was established in 1932 and is the oldest and most influential advocacy group in Canada’s Defence community, representing 52 associations from all parts of the country. The CDA expresses its ideas and opinions with a view to influencing government security and Defence policy. It is a non-partisan, independent and non-profit organization.

Minister Hehr explained his mandate commitments as they relate to Veterans.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, hosted a stakeholder summit with representatives of approximately 30 stakeholder groups from across Canada.

The Minister delivered opening remarks to participants in the morning. He then rejoined participants at the end of the day, following their discussions, to gather feedback resulting from the sessions.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, joined Canadian Football League (CFL) Commissioner Jeffrey Orridge, CFL Alumni and staff and residents of the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg where many Canadian Veterans reside, for a special meet and greet. The Grey Cup was on display at the event, part of collaboration between Veterans Affairs Canada and the CFL.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs, joined Canadian Football League (CFL) officials, Veterans, and thousands of football fans in the Veterans Remembrance Tribute at the Grey Cup Western Division semi-final playoff game in Calgary. Bob Bratina, Member of Parliament for Hamilton East–Stoney Creek, represented the Minister of Veterans Affairs at the mirror event for the Eastern Division semi-final playoff game in Hamilton, Ontario.

Held each year on the second Sunday in November, these annual ceremonies, which kick off the Canadian Football League semi-finals, demonstrate the unique partnership between the League and Veterans Affairs Canada, which began in 2008. The annual pre-game ceremony features a colour party, honour guard, and a moment of silence for Canada’s Veterans and still serving Canadian Armed Forces personnel.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, joined the Honourable Leo Housakos, Speaker of the Senate of Canada, and the Honourable Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons, for a ceremony in the Senate Chamber today. The Senate ceremony is a signature event of Veterans’ Week 2015.

This annual commemorative ceremony gathers Veterans and currently serving Canadian Armed Forces personnel to officially launch this important week, raising awareness of remembrance initiatives and bolstering continued support for Canada’s Veterans.
