Commemorative Ceremony
October 18-19, 2019
14:00 - 18:00

Essen, a town on the border with the Netherlands (near Bergen op Zoom) is planning several commemorative activities. Our town was liberated in the course of Operation Suitcase by the Canadian 4th Armoured Division and the 49th West Riding (Polar Bears) on October 22, 1944.

In honour of these men, the municipality has decided to erect a new monument for our liberators and 75 years of peace. The inauguration will take place on Friday 18/10 at 14:00h.

On Saturday there will be small services (at the town square and the graves of English airmen buried in Essen) and a holy mass. A column of historical vehicles will depart at the church and drive to the event location.

In the afternoon, a re-enactment camp is organised with live music from the 40's.  A vigil party will be present from the CFSUE (Canadian Forces Support Unit Europe) as well as a UK military presence.
