Retirement Income Security Benefit

To make things easier for Veterans, this benefit has been consolidated into the Income Replacement Benefit.

Having a disability can affect your career or ability to work. This can make it difficult to save for retirement. The Retirement Income Security Benefit offers financial stability to eligible, retired Veterans. Survivors may also qualify.

About this program

If your service related health problem has diminished your capacity to work before the age of 65, you may be woried about the retirement income you can expect to receive. This taxable, monthly benefit provides life-long stability to eligible Veterans beginning at age 65. It tops-up your total monthly income to at least 70 percent of the benefits you received from VAC before age 65. This added income is taxable.

Information for families

Survivors qualify for the benefit if:

  • they no longer qualify for the Earnings Loss Benefit, or
  • their Veteran spouse qualified forthe Retirement Income Security Benefit at the time of the Veteran’s death.

Do you qualify?

You should apply for this program if you:

  • are a Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces,
  • are at least age 65, and
  • qualify for, or receive, a VAC disability benefit.

One of the following must also apply:

  • You qualified for the Earnings Loss Benefit until the age of 65 and were found to have a diminished capacity to earn employment income, or
  • You were eligible for SISIP Long Term Disability on or after 1 April 2006 and were determined to be totally disabled.
