1986 Remembrance Day Poster

The Painting

This large (2.4 x 1.2 metres) oil painting is the work of an Australian artist who served in the First World War, Captain William Longstaff.

In the painting, Vimy Ridge, with the Memorial on the summit, stands out in the solemnity of a moonlit night. Gathered in front of it and on the adjoining slopes are the ghosts of hundreds of soldiers representing those Canadians who died in the capture of Vimy Ridge.

The Memorial

The Vimy Memorial stands as a tribute to all Canadians who died in the First World War. Its ramparts contain the names of 11,184 Canadians who died in that war and have no known grave.
