Key Timelines & Next Steps

We are continuing to work closely with Canadian Heritage and the National Capital Commission on next steps.

    • Launch of National design competition – Request for Qualifications
  • 2020
    • Consultation with Veterans, families and other stakeholders on the design guidelines for the competition.
    • Public viewing and online survey of design concepts
  • 2021
    • Announcement of the winning design
    • Development of winning design for the Monument
  • 2022
    • Sod-turning ceremony
  • 2023
    • Monument inauguration ceremony

Roles and responsibilities:

Veterans Affairs Canada: Project sponsor—that is, the Department that initiated the project.

Canadian Heritage: Project manager—that is, the federal department responsible for leading the development of national commemorative monuments on federal lands in the National Capital Region.

National Capital Commission: Partner—that is, the organization that coordinates the development of federal lands in the National Capital Region, including supporting the development of new monuments.
