The Canadian Memorial Garden - Backgrounder

The Canadian Memorial Garden is located south of Le Mémorial, in Caen, France, and recognizes the Canadian participation in the Battle of Normandy. A project of the Canadian Battlefields Foundation that was inaugurated in 1995, the garden was designed by students from Carleton University and the University of Montréal.

A low wall surrounding the pool within the garden records the many towns and villages liberated by Canadian soldiers in Normandy during the Second World War. At the highpoint of the garden, stands a sheer stone wall topped with a Canadian flag and a series of glass panels listing the names of Canadian units that saw action in Normandy.
