Glossary

Several terms or concepts are used in Tales of Animals in War that young students might not be familiar with. You can use this glossary to explain what these words mean or you could use it as a pre-reading activity. Students could use it as the basis of their own illustrated 'glossary'.

Beret
A beret is a distinctive hat worn by many members of the military.
Canadian Armed Forces
Canada’s military, including those who serve on land with the Canadian Army, at sea with the Royal Canadian Navy and in the air with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Courage
The ability to face fear or danger.
East Timor
East Timor is a small tropical country in Southeast Asia. East Timor covers the eastern half of the island of Timor. The western half is part of Indonesia.
Egypt
Egypt is a desert nation in the northeastern corner of Africa. It forms the only land link between the continents of Africa and Asia. Egypt is home to the Suez Canal, a waterway that allows ship traffic between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
Italy
Italy is a boot-shape, mountainous country that juts out of southern Europe into the Adriatic Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Mediterranean Sea and other waters.
Korea
Korea is a 1,200-kilometer-long peninsula located in the eastern part of the continent of Asia.
Military
Groups of people in charge of defending and fighting for a country. This usually includes an army (land), navy (sea) and air force (air).
Mission
An important task or duty assigned to military personnel like peacekeepers.
Peacekeeper
Military members who go to other countries to help stop fighting and violence.
Reconciliation
When countries that have been in conflict settle their differences peacefully and are ready to get along again.
Sacrifice
Giving up something that you want to keep. Many Canadian soldiers have sacrificed their lives in times of war and peace.
United Nations
An international organization of countries established in 1945 to promote international peace, security and cooperation.
Veteran
A person who once served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
