Interested in an AMAZING work and life experience? Want to learn more about Canada, France and yourself?

The Student Guide Program is a unique, rewarding opportunity for Canadian youth to live and work in France, learn Canadian history and meet people from around the world.

Every four months, Veterans Affairs Canada hires 15-18 dynamic students from across Canada to work as guides at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in northern France.

To apply, you must:

  • be a full-time post-secondary student
  • be fluently bilingual in English and in French
  • have strong public speaking skills, and
  • have experience working with the public

The job 

 Student guides:

  • welcome visitors from around the world
  • provide information on Canada’s military history for visitors to understand and appreciate Canada’s First World War memorials in Europe
  • answer questions about local attractions and points of interest
  • give guided tours outdoors of preserved battlefields, trenches and underground tunnels, and in visitors’ centres
  • participate in remembrance activities and events

The experience

As a student guide, you will:

  • have a once-in-a-lifetime experience and develop lifelong friendships
  • learn about Canadian history including soldiers’ achievements and sacrifices
  • immerse yourself in French culture and language
  • serve as an ambassador for Canada and your province…and choose to share your experience through VAC’s social media platforms!
  • hear personal stories from visitors that you’ll never forget
  • hone your public speaking skills
  • travel in Europe on your free time (Arras is about an hour from Paris by train!)
