On this page is written the following :

Those here commemorated served in the merchant navies of Canada Newfoundland or elsewhere in the Commonwealth more than seventy-five years before the making of this Book. They died during the period 1914 to 1918 in the War which some of them would have known as the Great War and which, in our time, we know as the First World War.

But now, though that Was has almost passed from living memory, these men and women are still remembered: For their lives meant more than the War in which they died, and their deaths more than can be known.

"There is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet." Jeremiah 49:25
