Son of Phillip Gard and Violet May Switzer of Fisher Branch, Manitoba. Nephew of Private Sidney Oscar Switzer, regimental number 186711, who fought in France in World War I with the 11th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force and the 1st Canadian Mountain Rifles. He survived the war.

Served in Manitoba, Jamaica with Y Force, Hong Kong with C Force, Japan as a prisoner of war. He had 1,997 days of service, including 1,356 overseas.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the Manitoba government named Gard Lake located east of Pike Lake in his honor in 1979.

Location:

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
