Baptized Étienne-Abel-Odilon Villeneuve. Son of Guillaume Villeneuve and Madeleine Chassé (deceased in 1895). His father remarried to Marie-Anne Bond in 1898 and he then passed in 1902. When he enlisted, Abel named his sister Élizabeth (wife of Philippe Martel) as next-of-kin, and she died in early 1916. He also stated being born in Montréal on September 2, 1893.

Courcelette is a village about 8 kilometres north-east of Albert (next to the main road D929 Albert-Bapaume). The REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY lies about 1.5 kilometres north-west of the village. The REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY (signposted in the centre of Courcelette) is 1.5 kilometres down a single track lane (suitable for cars).
