  • Grave Marker– This is the gravestone of the Naval officer L. Elliott that is situated in the old Colonial Cemetary. The SS Portadoc was sunk off Freetown on the 7th April 1941 by the U - Boat U124 at 17h30. The crew managed to get to Benty ( port in the South of Guinea near Forécariah) and were picked up by the French Vichy police and sent to Kindia prison. After having checked the internet I think that Officer Elliott was wounded during the sinking of the SS Portadoc and that he died of his injuries on the 25th of May- this needs to be confirmed by living crew members.
