Son of Aaron William Sarty and Sadie Elizabeth Whynot, of Mersey Point, Queens County, Nova Scotia.
Enlisted with the West Nova Scotia Regiment, he served in Nova Scotia, deployed on 28 November 1940 to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada, sent to New Brunswick, to Newfoundland with Force W, Québec, and Hong Kong with Force C. He had 1,254 days of service, including 749 overseas.

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
