An entry in the 9th Canadian Field Ambulance war diary for 7 September 1918 records:
 "Weather fine. Considerable hostile shelling about the hospital during the night.
529064 Pte. P.E. Gillespie, C.A.M.C., of this Unit was killed by a fragment of shell in ARRAS this evening."
