Son of Otto and Anna Kubat of Margo, Saskatchewan. The family came to Saskatchewan from their homeland of Czechoslovakia in 1937. In 1941, Josef enlisted in the Czech Air Force and Royal Air Force and left home at 18 years of age. He trained in England and the Bahamas as a co-pilot.
