"For gallantry and devotion to duty when HMCS Otter was lost." The sinking of HMCS Otter (Animal Class Yacht) after catching fire off of Halifax on 26 March 1941 with the loss of 19 members. Chief Gillis lost his life while trying to rescue his shipmates.

  • Photo of Daniel Gillis– Eng. 3rd Class (Chief Motor Mechanic) Gillis was formerly with the Canadian Protective Service, Customs.  He became a member when the RCMP took the Unit from Customs. Eng. 3rd Class Gillis served on Preventive Sea Duties as an Engineer with the Marine Division. He was married to Viola and had six children.
