Location:

POELCAPELLE BRITISH CEMETERY is located 10 Km north east of Ieper town centre on the Brugseweg (N313), a road connecting Ieper to Brugge. Two streets connect Ieper town centre onto the Brugseweg; Torhoutstraat leads from the market square onto the Kalfvaartstraat. At the end of Kalfvaartstraat is a large junction on which Brugseweg is the first right hand turning. The cemetery itself lies 10 Km along the Brugseweg on the right hand side of the road after passing through the village of Poelcapelle (now Poelkapelle).

  • Photo of Allen Otty– Lieutenant Allen Otty, killed in action North of Passchendaele on October 30th, 1917. He was 29. He was killed while serving with C Company, the 5th CMR. Otty enlisted with the 6 CMR on May 11th 1915, in Amherst, Nova Scotia, where the Otty family has a military history dating back to preconfederation. Otty was last heard from at 1:45 PM on the 30th, when after holding a desperate position against repeated counterattack since early that morning, a message from him arrived at HQ by carrier pigeon. It said "holding Source Farm with 6 men. Gifford on the right. Send reinforcements and ammo. Enemy estimated at 300 digging in on the right." No help reached him until dark, by which time sadly Otty had been killed.
