'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on September 15th and 16th 1916, this stretcher bearer worked unceasingly under intense fire attending to wounded in shell holes in the depth of 1200 yards by his own efforts he succeeded in evacuating and saving the lives of a large number of his comrades.' (London Gazette): 9-12-16).
