Son of Mark and Jane Haywood, of Victoria Corner, Carleton Co., New Brunswick. Brother of Leonard and Edgar, Oscar, Myrtle, Lioni and Sarah.

On December 31, 1916, a memorial service was held in Victoria Hall, crowded by those who had known Eric as friend and chum, to show respect. Reverend P.J. Trafton, read from the 1st Corinthians, Chapter 15. Driver Eric Haywood was born here some 24 years ago. When war was declared, he was among the first to respond, enlisting in August 1914, joining the 10th Field Battery, sailed overseas in November 1914 and went to the front in February 1915. For a year and nine months, he saw action.

Eric was popular as a young lad as well as in the trenches. He was hit by a gas shell when riding to the rear at a days end.

Charles M. Shaw, a long time friend, spoke at his service. The following are but a few of his words. Throughout the length and breadth of our Canada the bugle has sounded the battle cry and all through the great country men were tingling responsive to the appeal of loyalty. Among those who felt at the very first the not unwelcome grip of the strong hand of patriotism, was the young lad whose memory we are pleased to honour in these services. I am going to enlist, said Eric Haywood, when the call for volunteers was a possibility and when this became a certainty and recruiting offices were opened. The gallant young subject of this sketch was among the first to successfully face the recruiting officers and was early ranked among those who were the first to leave Canadian shores to fight for the oppressed of Europe.
