  • Photo of William McMillan– William McMillan [Willie] was the oldest of four children and the only son of Charles and Mary. Born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1899 he and his family emigrated to Canada in 1911. When the war started in 1914 he begged to be allowed to go but at 15 he was too young. To appease him his parents bought him a cart and horse to enable him to start a business. Not happy he continued to beg his parents to allow him to go to war. Finally at the age of 16 his parents agreed to lie about his age [saying he was 18] and he shipped out to England. This photo was taken just before he left for England.
