Location:

Mont St Eloi is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, 8 kilometres north-west of Arras. The village stands on high ground overlooking the battlefields of Vimy and Souchez and the main Bethune-Arras road, and the ruined towers that rise from it were used as an observation post during the French attacks at Neuville-St Vaast and Givenchy in May 1915. Ecoivres is a hamlet lying at the foot of the hill, to the south-west and about 1.5 kilometres from Mont St Eloi on the Arras-St Pol line. The ECOIVRES MILITARY CEMETERY is on the D49 road.

  • Southampton Cenotaph– Orland Knechtel was born on Sept 16th, 1893 in Maple Hill, Bruce County, Ontario. He joined the CEF on January 24th, 1916 in Guelph, listing his prior occupation as a mechanic. Knechtel's parents lived in Southampton at the time of his enlistment. Knechtel is remembered on the Southampton Cenotaph. This war memorial includes plaques with the names of men from World Wars 1 & 2. The WWI list is inscribed: "In grateful remembrance of the men of Southampton who fought and died in the Great War". Southmpton is in Bruce County, Ontario and is the oldest port on the Bruce Coast. This photograph was taken by Mr. Clive Freeman in the summer of 2002.
