Baptized Joseph-Alphonse-Edgar Charland. Son of Alphonse Charland and Clémentine Chandonnet (deceased in 1911), of Fortierville, Lotbinière, Québec. His father remarried to Marie-Louise Mercier in 1914 and he died five months later.

When he enlisted, Edgar stated being born in 1897 and used « Hector » as his first name. He named Philippe Chandonnet, his maternal uncle, form Porcupine, Cochrane, Ontario, as next of kin and heir.

Severely wounded during the Battle of Courcelette, Edgar was evacuated to 1st South Midland Casualty Clearing Station, then located in Vicquemont, near Amiens, where he died shortly after.

Warloy-Baillon is a village about 21 kilometres north-east of Amiens and 10 kilometres west of Albert. The WARLOY-BAILLON COMMUNAL CEMETERY is on the east side of the village and the EXTENSION is on the eastern side of the cemetery.
