His full name is Charles Harper Smith and served as Charles Harper.

Son of Selby Alvin Thomas and Amelia Ida Hartung of Des Moines, Iowa.

Brother of Privates Selby Preston Smith and Francis Somerfield Smith enlisted during the First World War without having seen action.

He voluntarily threw himself into the sea from the SS Dunsyre. His death was reported and recorded in Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. His family were notified on 27 August.
