"Master Warrant Officer Mercier was deployed as regimental sergeant major from September 2006 to August 2007. Displaying leadership and devotion to duty, he prepared his soldiers for the challenges they would face in Afghanistan, and inspired them as they went into battle. Sadly, Master Warrant Officer made the ultimate sacrifice when he succumbed to injuries sustained by an explosion from a roadside bomb."

  • Plaque– This was the laser engraved granite plaque that we designed to mark the unfortunate passing of MWO Mercier.  

It was originally displayed at the Kandahar Cenotaph from the date of his passing - and was repatriated to Canada in 2014.  

Today, it can be seen at the Afghanistan War Memorial located at National Defence Headquarters in Kanata, On.

  • Photo of Mario Joseph Christian Michel Mercier– MWO Mario Mercier, was killed on 22 August, 2007 after the vehicle he was traveling in, a LAV III, struck a suspected mine. The incident occurred at 6:19 am Kandahar time, approximately 50 km West of Kandahar City during Operation EAGLE EYE, a joint Afghan National Security Force (ANSF) and ISAF operation aimed at further stabilizing the District of Zharey.
